Sand Casting Delft Clay Casting Kit

Delft clay is the genuine Dutch clay used for sand casting jewellery, and it's the one we recommend after testing every alternative clay against it in our own studio. This casting kit gives you what you need to get started: 2kg of genuine Delft clay, a 60mm aluminium casting ring frame, step-by-step instructions with images, and a QR code linking to our instructional video.

Sand casting with Delft clay lets you turn almost any hard object into a metal piece. Shells, sticks, acorns, seeds, keys, existing jewellery, teeth, bone and gum nuts all work, and it's also a straightforward way to cast carved wax pieces or repurpose scrap silver and gold. Press your object into the clay to form a mould, remove it, then pour molten metal into the cavity it leaves behind.

We only stock and use genuine Delft clay in the studio. Some suppliers sell a "delft clay style" product, or Petrobond, as a cheaper casting clay substitute, but we've tested both side by side and neither packs as tightly or casts as cleanly as the real thing.

This kit includes the clay and casting ring, but you'll still need the rest of your setup: a Smith Little Torch, pickle, brass brush, copper tongs and a ceramic soldering board to melt and pour your metal. Worth knowing:

• Genuine Delft clay stays workable for 5-8 years. We're still casting from the same bag we bought seven years ago in the studio
• Only the small amount of burnt clay from each cast needs replacing; the rest gets reused indefinitely
• New crucibles need to be seasoned with borax powder before their first casting session
