Wax Carving & Filing Tools

Wax Carving & Filing Tools frequently asked questions

Wax carving tools are used in the lost wax casting process to shape, detail, and refine a wax model before it is sent to a caster. You carve your design into jewellery wax, usually in the form of a ring tube, block, or sheet, and the resulting wax model is used to create a mould into which molten metal is poured. The metal takes on the exact shape of your carved wax.

Wax carving tools have shaped tips, including spoon ends, pointed ends, blades, and loops, designed for removing wax, sculpting curves, and adding detail. Wax files are used to smooth and refine surfaces once the rough shape is established. Both are part of the wax carving process. Most makers use a set of carving tools alongside at least one file to take a model from rough form to a refined, casting-ready finish.
