What is Sterling Silver Patterned Wire?

Sterling silver patterned wire is made from 925 sterling silver, a high-quality alloy that’s 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals.

The wire is available in various shapes including flat, half-round, square and oval, which gives it a unique texture and look. Sterling silver patterned wire is loved by jewellery makers and crafters because it’s durable, versatile and affordable.

Types of Patterned Wire

There are many types of patterned wire, each with its own characteristics and uses. Here are some of the most common:

  • Flat pattern wire: This type of wire is flat and is used for making bracelets, earrings and pendants.

  • Half-round pattern wire: This type of wire is half round and is used for making rings, earrings and decorative accents.

  • Faceted pattern wire: This type of wire is faceted and is used for making statement pieces, pendants and earrings.

Styles of Patterned wires

  • Twist Wires – Twist wires make stunning rings and are also fantastic for hoop earrings, bangles and for detail around bezels.

  • Sparkle Wires - We love these sparkle wires. They are made in the USA and add a bit of sparkle to any piece of jewellery

Working with Patterned Wire

Working with patterned wire is easy but does require some basic knowledge and skills. Here are some tips for handling and storing patterned wire:

Handling and Storage

  • Handle patterned wire with care to not damage the shape and pattern.

  • Store patterned wire in a cool dry place to prevent tarnishing and corrosion.

  • Use a wire brush or polishing cloth to clean and polish patterned wire rather than harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can damage the wire.

Soldering tips for patterned silver wire

  • Patterned wires have a continuous pattern. When soldering a ring together, make sure the pattern lines up on both sides of the join so it looks like the pattern is continuous and the join is hidden. This is especially important with twist wire.

  • When soldering rings made from patterned wire, place the solder on the inside of the ring, so any excess solder is on the inside where it can be filed off and hidden.
