Alcohol Spirit Lamp

An alcohol lamp (also called a spirit lamp) has two main uses in the jewellery studio. The first is heating wax carving tools: rather than an electric pen station, you can heat tools like spatulas and wax shapers directly in the flame for blending, smoothing, and building up wax. The second is flame polishing, where you briefly pass a wax piece through the flame to smooth out surface texture and tool marks before casting.

This one is well thought through for bench use. The heavy glass reservoir has faceted sides, which means you can tip it on an angle to direct the flame more precisely without it rolling around. The screw adjuster on the side controls the height of the flame, so you can dial in exactly as much heat as you need. The safety cap snuffs the flame cleanly when you're done and helps stop the fuel from evaporating between sessions.

The reservoir holds 150ml of fuel, which gives you a good amount of working time before refilling. Replacement wicks are available separately.

Worth knowing:

  • Use for heating wax carving tools or flame polishing wax models
  • Faceted glass reservoir can be angled to direct the flame
  • Screw adjuster controls flame height
  • Safety cap snuffs the flame and reduces evaporation
  • 150ml fuel capacity
  • Replacement wicks available separately
  • Also included in the Ultimate Lost Wax Jewellery Tool Kit
