Wooden Wax Modelling Mandrel

A wax mandrel gives you something solid and steady to build a ring around, and this plain wooden one is the simple, reliable option we reach for whenever we're shaping a wax ring by hand.

It's round and tapers gently from 12mm up to 15mm across its 320mm length, so there's plenty of working room to find the right spot for whatever ring size you're building. Slide your wax ring tube or wax block onto the taper, and you've got a stable base to carve, file, and refine against without the wax twisting or slipping while you work.

This mandrel suits both hard and soft waxes, and it's especially handy for the building-up method, where you're adding wax gradually rather than carving down from a solid block. Having a true, tapered form underneath keeps your ring shape even and your sizing consistent as you go, the same job a ring mandrel does for metal, just suited to wax instead.

The smooth wood finish won't grab or tear at the wax the way a rougher surface can, so your work stays clean as you go.

Pair it with wax ring tubes to start your build, or add it to your kit alongside our other wax carving tools for a full wax working setup.

Worth knowing:

  • Being wood rather than metal, it won't mark or discolour softer waxes the way some metal mandrels can
  • Works equally well for hard carving waxes and the softer waxes used in the building-up method
