Jewellers Stone Setting Tool Kit

Bezel setting is the first stone setting technique we teach in the studio. This 7-piece kit holds the stone setting tools we reach for every time a cabochon goes into a ring, pendant or pair of earrings. If you've made a bezel cup and now need to get a stone into it neatly and securely, these are the tools that do the job.

A good bezel setting starts before the stone goes in. The round bezel mandrel lets you true up your bezel and stretch it slightly so it hugs the stone before you solder it to the backplate. Once the stone is seated, the two bezel pushers do the heavy lifting. Work at opposite points first, north and south, then east and west, then halfway between, so the metal comes over evenly without pleating. Both pushers also handle prongs, so the kit stays useful when you move on to claw settings.

The bezel roller rocks the rest of the wall down smoothly. Then a burnisher tightens and polishes the top edge until it grips the stone with no gaps. A 10x loupe lets you check your work up close before you call it finished.

Worth knowing:

• Fine silver bezel wire is softer than sterling and much easier to push over a stone, which is why we use it in class.
• You'll also need a way to hold your piece steady while you work. A ring clamp or bench vice does the job.
