Ceramic Round Casting Crucible

A crucible gives you a dish that can take direct flame without cracking, and this ceramic crucible is sized for our biggest melts.

Made from fused silica, this crucible handles precious metals up to 1537°C (2800°F), well past the melting point of gold, silver, and most casting alloys. At 96mm across and 30mm deep, it holds around 271g or 175dwt at a time, enough for large castings or bigger scrap melts without needing to work in batches.

We reach for a crucible like this one whenever we're melting a larger quantity of scrap metal down for casting grain. Shallow crucibles heat evenly and let you see what's happening as the metal melts, rather than working blind in a deep dish.

This crucible doesn't come with metal included, and it's sold on its own rather than as part of a kit, so it's worth having a look through our casting equipment range if you're setting up a full casting station.

If you don't already have a crucible holder, you'll need a Large WHIP Crucible Holder to use with this one safely.

Worth knowing:

  • Season the crucible before first use by coating the inside with Borax Powder and heating gently, this protects the surface and stops metal sticking
  • Let the crucible cool naturally after use rather than quenching it in water, rapid temperature changes can crack ceramic
  • Keep a separate crucible for each metal you cast, gold and silver residue left in a crucible can contaminate the next melt
  • A dedicated melting crucible is worth keeping separate from anything used for mixing plaster or investment, to avoid contamination
