Ceramic Round Melting Casting Crucible  - Medium

A crucible gives you a dish that can take direct flame without cracking, and this ceramic crucible is sized for small, regular melts rather than big pours.

Made from fused silica, this crucible handles precious metals up to 1537°C (2800°F), well past the melting point of gold, silver, and most casting alloys. At 60mm across and 17mm deep, it holds around 62g or 40dwt at a time, enough for a decent-sized casting or a few smaller pours without overfilling it.

We reach for a crucible like this one whenever we're melting scrap metal down for casting grain. Shallow crucibles heat evenly and let you see what's happening as the metal melts, rather than working blind in a deep dish.

This crucible doesn't come with metal included, and it's sold on its own rather than as part of a kit, so it's worth having a look through our casting equipment range if you're setting up a full casting station.

If you don't already have a crucible holder, you'll need a Small WHIP Crucible Holder to use with this one safely.

Worth knowing:

  • Season the crucible before first use by coating the inside with Borax Powder and heating gently, this protects the surface and stops metal sticking.
  • Let the crucible cool naturally after use rather than quenching it in water, rapid temperature changes can crack ceramic.
  • Keep a separate crucible for each metal you cast, gold and silver residue left in a crucible can contaminate the next melt.
  • A dedicated melting crucible is worth keeping separate from anything used for mixing plaster or investment, to avoid contamination.
