A crucible gives you a dish that can take direct flame without cracking, and this ceramic crucible is sized for small, regular melts rather than big pours.
Made from fused silica, this crucible handles precious metals up to 1537°C (2800°F), well past the melting point of gold, silver, and most casting alloys. At 46mm across and 13mm deep, it holds around 31g or 20dwt at a time, enough for a decent-sized casting or a few smaller pours without overfilling it.
We reach for a crucible like this one whenever we're melting scrap metal down for casting grain. Shallow crucibles heat evenly and let you see what's happening as the metal melts, rather than working blind in a deep dish.
This crucible doesn't come with metal included, and it's sold on its own rather than as part of a kit, so it's worth having a look through our casting equipment range if you're setting up a full casting station.
