Compressed Charcoal Soldering Block

Compressed charcoal blocks like this one reflect heat back at your work rather than absorbing it, which means less of your torch's heat goes to waste and your joins come together faster and cleaner.

Being compressed rather than soft, this block is noticeably tougher. We've found it lasts three to five times longer than a soft charcoal block under regular studio use.

You can carve shallow depressions into the surface to hold small pieces steady while you work, or use it as a base to melt scrap silver and gold.

We reach for a charcoal block specifically for soldering larger bangles and pieces that need more sustained heat, for granulation, for reticulation, and for melting small amounts of precious metal.

Made from compressed charcoal in Poland, this block measures 140mm x 70mm x 32mm.

This charcoal block is also available as part of our Essential Soldering Kit, our Soldering Board Set, our Studio Pro Jewellery Tool Kit, and our Deluxe Studio Pro Kit with Smith Little Torch.

Worth knowing:

  • Quench the block in water after every use, charcoal keeps smouldering once the torch is off, and left unchecked that's a fire risk. Quenching also helps the block last longer
  • Wrap the block in binding wire to stop it cracking or breaking apart with repeated use
